5 Technology Observations: 22 June, 2015

Good morning, I.T. entrepreneurs. Here are five technology news insights, updates, gossip and chatter to start your day for Monday, June 22, 2015.

Actually, today's update involves eight items to sip on...

Activision's Thomas Shaw: "Game on" for Docker.

8. Big Event: That would be this week's DockerCon in San Francisco, where DevOps and systems administrators learn key trends in container technologies -- most notably, Docker. Among the sessions worth watching: Activision Build Engineer Thomas Shaw describing how Docker is driving cultural change in the gaming industry. Oh, and the person to know at the event: Senior VP Roger Egan, a Red Hat veteran who spotted the Docker opportunity long before most of us had heard about software containers.

7. Corporate Culture Apps: It sounds like more and more businesses are using so-called "Pulse" apps to quickly survey employee moods and perspectives. 6. Join Me Tuesday: At 1:00 p.m. ET/10:00 a.m. PT for Tech News Today, anchored by Mike Elgan. I'll weigh in on a range of consumer IT issues.

5. Required Viewing: If you're a parent, take your entire family to go see Pixar's latest gem, Inside Out. I could share a few dozen reasons why. Instead, I'll simple say "go."

4. The Chips Are Down: AMD, struggling to compete against Intel, may break itself up, according to Re/Code. One potential option involves splitting off the graphics and licensing business from AMD's server processor business. Shares are down 40 percent (ouch) over the past 12 months.

3. Join Me Again Tuesday Night: That's June 23 at 9:01 p.m. ET/6:01 p.m. PT for our next podcast (Episode 41). Exablox CEO Doug Brockett, describing a new generation of scale-out storage that has attracted nearly $40 million in funding so far...

2. Engaging But Scattered: On this morning's TechCrunch, you'll find an enterprise guest blog from Box CEO Aaron Levie and an interview about streaming music with Guns N' Roses guitarist Slash. I love TechCrunch for its varied content -- but that will also be the site's downfall. In content you can go shallow and wide across a range of subjects or narrow and deep in one core area. When you try to do both, bad things (like sky-high costs) tend to happen...

1. Next Potential Move: Nothing's official. But the potential playing field for a game-changing development is starting to take shape...
