Former Intronis CEO Sam Gutmann is back in the cloud backup and data protection game. He's now CEO of OwnBackup, which claims to be the top backup application in Salesforce.com's AppExchange. OwnBackup is pushing beyond Salesforce and focusing on SaaS- and PaaS-oriented cloud-to-cloud backup.
Gutmann previously co-founded Intronis (a cloud-based backup provider) in 2003 and led the company as its CEO until 2010. After moving on from Intronis. Gutmann spent recent years evaluating business startups as managing director of Golden Seeds -- an angel investor network focused on women-led startups.
So far, OwnBackup's platform supports backup capabilities for social media platforms, Salesforce and ServiceNow. The company has offices in New Jersey and Israel. The management team includes five core leaders:
In addition to Gutmann at the CEO post:
- CTO Ariel Berkman co-founded the company in 2012. He has worked in and around enterprise systems including Unix and data backup platforms since 1994.
- COO Eran Cohen co-founded the company and is a developer and software engineer.
- Daniel Gershuni is a user experience expert who has previously focused on e-learning, banking and e-commerce platforms.
- VP Ori Yankelev, I believe, is an Intronis veteran and a Salesforce.com expert who has worked for OpenView Venture Partners -- the VC that backed Intronis.
The big question: How is OwnBackup unique in the evolving market for cloud-based backup services? My initial answer involves the source data. Most cloud backup providers are focused on gathering on-premises data and protecting it on a cloud-based storage system. In stark contrast, I think OwnBackup focuses on pure cloud-to-cloud backup opportunities and doesn't get involved in on-premises data -- though I haven't confirmed that directly with OwnBackup.
I'm pinging Gutmann for more details.
